Carrocerías Ayats builds for Twiliner the first “business-class” low-emission night coach that will connect major European cities

Equipped with fully reclining seats that turn into a full bed at the push of a button, travelers will enjoy a journey similar to airline business class — but on wheels.

Carrocerías Ayats, a Catalan manufacturer with more than 120 years of history, has developed and built for the Swiss start-up Twiliner the first European business-class, low-emission night coach that will connect several of the continent’s main capitals.

The model, designed and entirely custom-built for Twiliner, combines Ayats’ long-standing expertise in double-deck buses that are highly customizable and developed in close collaboration with the operator. This working philosophy—adapting to each client and creating unique projects—has been key to making Twiliner’s innovative concept possible.

The vehicle features 21 lie-flat seats (18 on the upper deck and 3 on the lower deck), inspired by airline business class, complete with pillows, blankets, individual tables, power outlets, reading lights, and free internet access. Each seat is fully reclining and patented by Twiliner, developed with safety experts and approved according to European regulations. At the push of a button, the seat converts into a full bed, offering a rest experience comparable to airline first class.

On the lower deck, passengers have access to spacious bathrooms and changing rooms, as well as a snack bar with drinks and light refreshments. There are also individual compartments for personal items and space for luggage, bicycles, skis, or surfboards with prior reservation.

A sustainable model for European mobility

The vehicle runs on HVO diesel, a renewable fuel derived from recycled oils and fats, achieving:

  • 85% fewer emissions than an equivalent flight
  • Around 25 g CO₂e per passenger/km, figures comparable to rail
  • A cleaner operation aligned with European decarbonization goals

Ferran Stoka, Commercial Director at Ayats, commented: “We are very proud to help Twiliner offer a flexible, eco-friendly and comfortable alternative to flying. The innovative, safe and highly comfortable design of the vehicle built by Ayats makes the premium night-travel concept a reality.”

Twiliner’s routes and European expansion

Twiliner offers night journeys with business-class comfort, connecting several major European capitals and cities.

  • Zürich – Amsterdam route: stops in Basel (Switzerland), Luxembourg (Luxembourg), Brussels (Belgium), and Rotterdam (Netherlands).
  • Zürich – Barcelona route: stop in Girona (Spain) before arriving in Barcelona.

Together, the coaches connect at night Barcelona, Girona, Zürich, Bern, Basel, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Brussels, and Luxembourg, giving passengers a sustainable, comfortable, and efficient alternative to air and rail transport.

Looking to the future, Twiliner plans for its network to connect 25 European cities by 2028, establishing itself as a real and competitive option compared with night trains and short- and medium-haul flights.
